Witham is an ancient and town with a wide medieval market reminisent of Chipping Sodbury in Gloucestershire, Cressing Temple Barn lies to the north, built in 1137 and assocated with the Knights Templar. Witham was formed of two settlemants, Chipping Hill to the north and Newland Street which followed the old Roman Road to the south. Along with other north Essex towns Witham was involed in the wool trade from medievel times but to a lessor extent than Coggeshall, having a more mixed economy. It was briefly a spar town and many of the older timber framed buildings were fronted with neat Georgian facades at thiis time, especially along Newland street. it was known as a smart country town until the 1960’s when the Greater London Council’s overspill policy created large council housing estates around the town more recently the town has expanded to the south close to the A12.
